Sam is an established business owner with a website — but almost no SEO. She came to me wanting to revise her meta descriptions and also with a general feeling that her website’s back-end needed some help.

Meta titles and descriptions are the first bits of information seen on Google before clicking through to a site, so it’s important that this information is clear, concise, and pops off the page.

While under the hood, I made some recommendations to increase her site speed and searchability —ultimately positively impacting her SEO!

In addition to updating her meta descriptions:

  • She now has a custom 404 page that keeps lost visitors engaged and encourages them to explore her website.
  • Her about page looks good on mobile (it had fallen apart over time and needed some love)
  • Every image now has alt text, which makes her business more accessible to everyone.
  • I cleaned up her URLs (e.g., “about-1” ➡️ “about”) and added 301 redirects to ensure old links still work and her SEO stays intact.
  • Her site is newly speedy! 4 of her pages were being weighed down by large images and heavy videos , so I remediated those pages to boost loading speed and improve overall functionality.

“Her communication was incredible, and her work was outstanding!”

What is remediation?

Remediation involves addressing technical issues that hinder a website’s overall performance. It’s a best practice to periodically review and optimize websites, making them more efficient and effective over time.

For Sam, this included compressing images and removing video backgrounds that were slowing down her site’s loading speed.

The results are in – and impressive

  • Her page sizes were reduced by an average of ~90%. This means faster access to her content, which can help reduce bounce rates, improve SEO, and create a smoother browsing experience for visitors.

  • This change also improved her website’s overall performance scores by ~10%. And for another quick win, I advised her to turn off her site-wide animations for an additional ~10% boost. This would bring her performance scores from the 60’s all the way to the 80’s — which is pretty impressive for a Squarespace site with as much pizzaz as hers!

I sent her off with a training video on how to maintain her newly speedy site, giving her the autonomy to continue optimizing with confidence.

“The follow up Loom videos were super helpful so that I know exactly what to do moving forward, and I feel super well equipped to keep my site running as well as she left it!”
